Worksheet variations

To find f⁻¹, write y = f(x), swap x and y, and solve the new equation for y. The inverse undoes the function: operations are reversed and done in the opposite order. A quick check is that f(f⁻¹(x)) = x.

Easyf(x) = −5x + 9f−1(x) = Linear functionsMediumf(x) = 4x3 + 5f−1(x) = Fractions and cubesHardf(x) = 2x − 4 − 4f−1(x) = Rational functions

How to solve it: a worked example

Find the inverse function.

  1. Startf(x) = −4x + 6f−1(x) =
  2. Swap x and yx = −4y + 6
  3. Solve for yy = x − 6−4
  4. Answerx − 6−4

Common mistakes to watch for

  • Writing the reciprocal 1/f(x) instead of the inverse.
  • Undoing the operations in the same order instead of the reverse order.
  • Swapping x and y but then solving for x.

FAQ

Is f⁻¹(x) the same as 1/f(x)?

No. The −1 means the inverse function, which undoes f. The reciprocal 1/f(x) is a different thing.

How can you check an inverse?

Compose them: f(f⁻¹(x)) and f⁻¹(f(x)) should both simplify to x.

Is every worksheet different?

Yes. Numbers are generated each time, and the answer key is calculated for that sheet. Swap any single question and its answer updates too.

Can I mix inverse functions with other skills?

Yes. In the generator, add more skills; each gets its own section on the sheet with its own instructions.

Is it free to print?

Yes. Generating and printing from the browser is free with no sign-up. PDF downloads need a free account.
