Worksheet variations

A permutation counts ordered arrangements: nPr = n! ÷ (n − r)!, such as giving out first, second and third prizes. A combination counts selections where order doesn't matter: nCr = n! ÷ (r!(n − r)!), such as choosing a committee. Ask whether swapping two chosen items gives something different; if it does, order matters.

Common mistakes to watch for

  • Using a permutation when the order doesn't matter.
  • Forgetting to divide by r! for a combination.
  • Computing n! ÷ r! instead of n! ÷ (n − r)!.

FAQ

How do you decide between a permutation and a combination?

Ask whether order matters. Choosing a president and vice-president is a permutation; choosing a two-person committee is a combination.

Why is C(n, r) smaller than P(n, r)?

Each group of r items can be ordered r! ways, and a combination counts all of them once. So C(n, r) = P(n, r)/r!.

Is every worksheet different?

Yes. Numbers are generated each time, and the answer key is calculated for that sheet. Swap any single question and its answer updates too.

Can I mix permutations and combinations with other skills?

Yes. In the generator, add more skills; each gets its own section on the sheet with its own instructions.

Is it free to print?

Yes. Generating and printing from the browser is free with no sign-up. PDF downloads need a free account.
