Worksheet variations

P divides AB in the ratio a : b when AP is a parts and PB is b parts, so P is a ÷ (a + b) of the way from A to B. Find that fraction, multiply it by the change in x and the change in y, and add the results to A's coordinates.

How to solve it: a worked example

Find the coordinates of point P.

  1. StartA(5, 2), B(9, −10)Find point P on AB so that AP : PB = 2 : 2.
  2. P is this fraction of the way from A to B22 + 2 = 12
  3. x-coordinate5 + 12(4) = 7
  4. y-coordinate2 + 12(−12) = −4
  5. Answer(7, −4)

Common mistakes to watch for

  • Using a ÷ b instead of a ÷ (a + b).
  • Measuring the fraction from B instead of from A.
  • Forgetting to add A's coordinates at the end.

FAQ

What does a ratio of 1 : 2 from A to B mean?

The point is 1 part from A and 2 parts from B, so it is 1/3 of the way from A to B. Add 1/3 of the change in x and y to A.

Does the direction of the segment matter?

Yes. Partitioning from A to B in 1 : 2 gives a point near A; from B to A it gives a point near B. Always start from the first point named.

Is every worksheet different?

Yes. Numbers are generated each time, and the answer key is calculated for that sheet. Swap any single question and its answer updates too.

Can I mix partitioning a segment in a ratio with other skills?

Yes. In the generator, add more skills; each gets its own section on the sheet with its own instructions.

Is it free to print?

Yes. Generating and printing from the browser is free with no sign-up. PDF downloads need a free account.
