Worksheet variations

In a stem-and-leaf plot each data value is split into a stem (the tens digit) and a leaf (the ones digit). The row 4 | 2 5 7 stands for 42, 45 and 47. The leaves are in order, so the plot lists the whole data set from least to greatest, which makes the median easy to find.

Common mistakes to watch for

  • Reading a leaf on its own (5) instead of with its stem (45).
  • Skipping a stem with no leaves, or counting it as a value.
  • Finding the middle stem instead of the middle data value for the median.

FAQ

Why are the leaves always in order?

Ordered leaves turn the plot into a sorted list, so the least, greatest and median can be read directly. An unordered plot still shows the data but loses that advantage.

What does a stem with no leaves mean?

No data values fall in that range. For example, an empty 3 row means no values from 30 to 39; it is kept so the gap in the data is visible.

Is every worksheet different?

Yes. Numbers are generated each time, and the answer key is calculated for that sheet. Swap any single question and its answer updates too.

Can I mix stem-and-leaf plots with other skills?

Yes. In the generator, add more skills; each gets its own section on the sheet with its own instructions.

Is it free to print?

Yes. Generating and printing from the browser is free with no sign-up. PDF downloads need a free account.
