Worksheet variations

In a table of equivalent ratios, every y is the same multiple of x, so y = kx. In other tables y may be x plus a fixed number, so y = x + k. Check the rule against every column.

How to solve it: a worked example

Write an equation for y in terms of x.

  1. StartA car travels at a constant 575757 km per hour. Write an equation for the distance d it travels in t hours.
  2. The amount grows by the rate for each unitddd === 57t57t57t
  3. Answerddd === 57t57t57t

Common mistakes to watch for

  • Using the change in y from column to column as the multiplier when x doesn't count by 1.
  • Checking the rule against only the first column.
  • Writing the equation for x in terms of y.

FAQ

How can you tell y = kx from y = x + k?

Divide each y by its x. If the quotient is the same every time, the rule is y = kx. If instead y − x is the same every time, the rule is y = x + k.

Which variable is dependent?

y, because its value depends on the value chosen for x. x is the independent variable.

Is every worksheet different?

Yes. Numbers are generated each time, and the answer key is calculated for that sheet. Swap any single question and its answer updates too.

Can I mix equations from tables with other skills?

Yes. In the generator, add more skills; each gets its own section on the sheet with its own instructions.

Is it free to print?

Yes. Generating and printing from the browser is free with no sign-up. PDF downloads need a free account.
