Worksheet variations

A rectangle a wide and x + b long can be split into two parts: one a by x and one a by b. Its area is a(x + b) as a product, or ax + ab as a sum of the parts, so a(x + b) = ax + ab. Read backwards, the model factors a sum: the common side is a common factor.

How to solve it: a worked example

Use the area model to write equivalent expressions.

  1. StartWrite the area of the whole rectangle in two ways: as a product and as a sum.x114
  2. Area of the whole rectangle: width times length4(x4(x4(x +++ 11)11)11)
  3. Add the areas of the two parts444 ×\times × xxx +++ 444 ×\times × 111111 === 4x4x4x +++ 444444
  4. Answer4(x4(x4(x +++ 11)11)11) === 4x4x4x +++ 444444

Common mistakes to watch for

  • Multiplying only the first part: writing 3(x + 4) = 3x + 4.
  • Factoring out a common factor that isn't the greatest one.
  • Adding the parts' side lengths instead of multiplying them to get areas.

FAQ

How does an area model show the distributive property?

The whole rectangle's area is width × length, a(x + b). The two parts have areas ax and ab. Both describe the same rectangle, so a(x + b) = ax + ab.

How do you factor 12x + 18 with an area model?

Find the greatest common factor, 6, and make it the shared side. The other sides are 12x ÷ 6 = 2x and 18 ÷ 6 = 3, so 12x + 18 = 6(2x + 3).

Is every worksheet different?

Yes. Numbers are generated each time, and the answer key is calculated for that sheet. Swap any single question and its answer updates too.

Can I mix distributive property with area models with other skills?

Yes. In the generator, add more skills; each gets its own section on the sheet with its own instructions.

Is it free to print?

Yes. Generating and printing from the browser is free with no sign-up. PDF downloads need a free account.
